Wildfire Alerts

We had a near-miss last night when a brush fire started at about 7:00PM near the Murphy Ranch ruins in Rustic Canyon.  LAFD knocked the fire down after a three-hour fight using five helicopters and about 90 personnel.  There were about twenty LAFD vehicles staged near Casale/Capri.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There are a number of resources available that provide alerts and/or updates on wildfire (and other) threats in our vicinity.

Go to and sign up for an account on NotifyLA and Nixle.  These services provide comprehensive alerts and updates via text, phone, and email.

Following @NotifyLA on Twitter is essential.

Consider following @ReadyLA, @LAFD, @LAFDPrepared, @LACoFDPIO, @LACOFD, and @LAFDwest on Twitter.

Also useful on Twitter are @paliscanner and @TCEP90290.

For live updates – though it can be difficult to decipher – monitoring LAFD radio traffic using the Broadcastify website or app ( can be quite interesting.  There are many feeds available, but “Los Angeles City Fire” is usually appropriate – last night it provided a blow-by-blow account of the firefight at Murphy Ranch.

For information on air quality, will show local monitoring stations.

Finally, the Alert Wildfire website ( allows live viewing of cameras placed to monitor the LA, Orange, and Ventura county wildfire risk areas.

Have a pool? Worried about wildfires? Read on…

Many fire departments are recommending auxiliary pool pumps as a secondary means of fighting wildfires for homes near the wildland interface boundary (that would be all of us).

Here are some links to various companies supplying such systems:

Of course, there are many other sources. Search “home pool fire pump” for options.
